Why Are You Eating What You Are Eating Right Now?

By Karen MacKay You are what you eat? Its really more like you are what you think. When it comes to eating or eating badly or eating too much, its more accurately you are what you are thinking while you are eating. Can you follow that? Its what your subconscious is ruminating about that effects how your food is digested and absorbed. How do you feel after youve eaten too much, not enough, or food that doesnt contribute to your health? Does it make you feel bad, good or indifferent? Hear yourself, the words that come to mind mean something to your nutrition. Now consider this. Why do you eat? The first thing you might think, of course, is that you are hungry. That would be the best answer but often is not the true reason. Stop and consider what is driving you to devour something. What is your mood? Are you happy, sad, depressed, angry? It makes a difference to not only your digestive process but also to your lack of well-being and possible weight gain. When you are ready to eat something, stop a moment and realize what it is you need at that moment. Are you tired and need rest or do you need something nutritious? Would jumping up and down revive your energy? Would calling someone shed the loneliness? Or would sitting down and breathing deeply for a while relieve the stress? Expressing your emotions and desires are often suppressed by stuffing down food that is not required to maintain the bodys energy supply. Eating to mask the truth can be perilous to good health. Dont do it. Its too risky. Begin a new habit. Before you eat a snack or while you are having a meal begin to pay attention to how you are feeling. Are you relaxed, eating slowly and aware of what your body needs? Are you gulping down food like it might be snatched away? The adrenal glands secrete a hormone called cortisol when a person is stressed. It makes the body store fat rather than utilizing the foods energy. It also stresses the body causing quicker aging. Make a choice to eat in a calm, relaxed environment. Begin to notice what you really want when you are choosing to eat. Is it a hunger to supply yourself with nutrition or is it a physical or emotional hunger that could be better served by doing something else? Its up to you. We have all seen flashbacks in movies; usually they are portrayed as visual memories of a past event or experience triggered by a current event or experience. Even the rap singer Eminem uses flashbacks in his video to show scenes from his childhood and thus express feelings towards a difficult relationship with his mother. At one point in the video, we see the singer Eminem as a grown-up watching himself as a child being mistreated by his mother. There are also flashbacks where a person from the past appears in the present. In the popular TV show Six Feet Under where we see the character Nat talking to his dead father as if he is still alive. We also associate flashbacks with posttraumatic stress disorder; like veterans of war who have flashbacks of bombings from loud noises in the street. In film, these images of flashbacks need to be visual but the underlying aim is to express emotions around a past event. In everyday life we all experience flashbacks at times. For example, when a song comes on the radio and all of sudden we feel sad as memories come back of an ex boyfriend we associate with the song. Flashbacks come from deep within our memory and sometimes we do not even recall the event that causes the feeling. The smell of a flower may cause us to feel a strange melancholy, a deja vu type feeling but we cannot remember the event that goes with it. Sometimes, we are not even conscious of a flashback, often times it is just a feeling that appears to come from nowhere. People who suffer from depression are often victims of flashbacks without knowing it. If we are not conscious of what triggers our feelings, we may believe that these feelings do not come from an event outside of ourselves but rather define who we are. If we are conscious that it is an event that caused us to feel powerless we then know it is not permanent. For example if we lose a job, we feel powerless but it does not define who we are as a person inside as we know the cause. With emotional flashbacks, however, a person may have that feeling of powerlessness without even being aware of the cause, which could date back as far as childhood. We see this happen often in children victim of sexual abuse. There is a major difference between saying “I feel powerless due to the job situation” to believing “I am powerless as a person”. The second statement can lead to depression. In Eminems video we see him hiding in his closet as a child, frightened, but in reality the feeling of fear is often remembered disassociated from the actually event and without the words needed to express it. Children do not rely on words, they simply feel. For example, a woman who had a violent father that she had to hide from may over react when she hears her husband shouting in anger and be struck by panic though her husband is not violent. Feelings from the past, of fear and powerlessness, may overcome her. She may not recognizing that she is not only reacting to her husband but reliving emotions from a past event. She could easily answer back to her husband but due to emotional flashbacks, she is terrified and unable to deal with the situation. In childhood she felt this fear but had no words to express it. Words can help us to understand and deal with feelings. In depression, people may suffer from emotional flashbacks without knowing it. For example, take a person who felt rejected by a parent in childhood. As an adult a certain tone of voice similar to that parents voice may cause an emotional flashback of such feelings as being a burden, or unwanted and powerless. The tone of voice in this case has a similar effect as the loud noise bringing up flashbacks of violence for a veteran of war. This memory and the feelings it brings up, especially of powerlessness, can be a possible contributing cause of depression. People who are depressed often talk of the feeling of falling into a hole. This hole can be a type of flashback of a very painful emotional memory, often a type of trauma. Flashbacks can be quite strong, as veterans of war suffering from posttraumatic stress know. The concept of emotional flashbacks can help people to understand and gain a sense of control over these very strong emotions that appear to come from nowhere. Flashbacks are not the same as posttraumatic stress disorder; flashbacks are one of many symptoms of PTSD. We all have flashbacks, probably much more frequent then we realize, and most of the time they are pleasant memories. It is only when they interfere with our life that we need to bring them up and verbalize them, and recognize that they are not part of us but belong to our past. This is difficult to do alone and may require professional help of a therapist. There are many different approaches. What is important is to find a therapist you feel comfortable with and have confidence in. It is important to remember that depression is a complex illness with many different possible causes including biological and varied treatment plans that need to be assessed by a professional. If you follow these common sense pointers on first date safety you will have a good first date. By Ian Christie You need to be aware of a significant career management danger. In this tough economy and job market, your professional expectations may be unmet. Whether it is job satisfaction, career development or job search success, things may not be going your way. When this happens, there is a natural tendency to disengage, to unplug. You go through the motions, but part of your mind is elsewhere; unfocused. You can instantly recognize people who are fully engaged. They are focused, working on what is most important at that time, and committed. And you can recognize those who are not. Which are you? Why your head should be in the game Here is what happens when you arent fully engaged. Your efforts are scattered. You dont do your best, which hurts you and hurts your employer, colleagues and clients. With one foot out the door and one in, you are dissatisfied which often negatively impacts your personal life. You are certainly not using your talents to their fullest. You are wasting your precious time and may be a productivity risk to your employer. You arent making a difference. In short, you are sabotaging your career. Certainly, we all have days when our motors just arent running at full speed. Thats fine. What you should be concerned with, however, is identifying if you are habitually disengaged, and if so, resolve to snap out of it. What can you do about it? 1. Diagnose yourself Take a page from Dr. Phil and accept reality. Is your head really in the game or not? Here are some statements to test yourself: * I am frequently or always dissatisfied with my work situation and I havent done anything concrete to resolve it * I tend to complain, put the blame on others, or I have developed a cynical attitude * I always have one foot out the door, keeping my options open, but never acting on them * I jump from job to job, assignment to assignment without really settling, or making a difference * I havent made a noticeable difference where I work or the projects I work on * My performance barely meets expectations, or worse * My mind wanders during my work day and I have trouble focusing and delivering on projects and responsibilities * I feel bested or outclassed by colleagues or customers when I am discussing work-related things. I dont have a lot to say. * My presentation is weak, sloppy or lacking direction * I dont have a plan as to what my next steps are from now, going forward If you answered yes to 1 or more of the above, then follow the remaining steps. 2. Try and figure out why One way to do that is to review your history. Is this the first time you have been in this situation or is it a recurring pattern? If the later, then the chances are that it is you rather than your environment. If the former, what is it about your current situation and environment that is causing it? 3. What choice can you make right now that will make a difference? A common reaction is to identify some large change and focus on that as the answer to our lack of engagement. If I only had this job, or worked for this company, then I would give 110%.” Maybe. But what about today? We choose how we react to our environment. What can you do today? Here are some things you can do: Change your attitude. A reality-check can do wonders in changing behavior. Refocus. Go deep. Overreact. Throw yourself into your work or job search. Do your best. Immerse yourself and see what happens. Identify what motivates you and focus on building that. See if you can inject more of those motivations into what you do. In particular, those things which align with the priorities of your employer, or your own business. Find the good in your situation. What can you identify about your job or situation that is positive? Be thankful for what you have. Identify what the key success criteria are for you, for your employer, colleagues and customers. Determine how you can be successful in the current environment and focus on that. 4. Medium-term strategies: Go internal. Build on what you have started in the short-term. How can you turn this situation around and be a rousing success story? Adjust your expectations. Goals can be energizing if we actively pursue them, or a real drag on our energy when we keep them alive without making progress towards their fulfillment.
